I’ve always loved Bak Kua even when I was living in Asia and now that I’m not in Asia, of course I craved for it when the Chinese New Year season is round the corner. I think moreso during the festive season, for the Chinese New Year is a huge festival in Asia. Someone asked me the other day if I missed home and I have to say that I missed the food more than the place. If they had a mini Hong Kong or mini Asia in Canada, I think I’m all set.

Bak Kua comes in various flavor and sizes – many varieties to choose from and during the Chinese New Year season, folks would queue up for hours at the most popular Bak Kua store and wait for a few boxes of Bak Kua for gifts and personal consumption during Chinese New Year. Lucky for me – the spouse travels a lot around Canada and United States, so I got my munchies for the new year from Vancouver and they are certainly not cheap at all. about $25 for 1Ibs of meat jerky – my grandmother would have flipped. Not everyone is as lucky as I am to be able to afford something so small and so expensive, I am really grateful for my life here in Canada and a good spouse.

The spouse who is currently in Indonesia for work – visited my favorite munchie store – and tried some of my favorite munchie that I loved when I am in Indonesia.

I loved the ones with the gula melaka in it and not the coconut ones – but you could have the ones with peanuts too – if you wished. These are really yummy and light – and anyone would love it – because they melt in your mouth. I remembered my mom buying them for us after going to church every Saturday.

I haven’t had a frappuccino for a long time – well ever since staying in an area that doesn’t have a Starbucks unless you head out to the city – or in Toronto or Vancouver. The spouse tried buying some for me when he was up in the city – but by the time he got home from a 2 hrs flight – it was pretty much flat – well, I can’t say it’s flat – since they are not carbonated – but they didn’t taste good at all.
Well, Starbucks brings back a lot of good memories for me – since we only had Starbucks back home like 15 – 18 yrs ago – and when they first opened, we all found it very classy to be there sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee or fruity drinks and reading or better still having your laptop open and working on it. I’ve spent many hours at the Starbucks at home with my god-daughters and I do miss them a lot and wished I was there for them when their father passed away. Anyhow, I’m getting a frappuccino soon because I’m heading to the city to meet the spouse – who is returning on a trip.

So there was a cart at the Farmer’s market back home and they had these charity hotdog – to raise fund for some children’s place in town. Not a bad day for a quickie – so asked for one. In order to get fed, one just need to make a donation, so I did. I see a lot of people giving like a toonie or a loonie but I gave $5 and the guy selling the hotdogs asked if I only wanted one. Guess he must think $5 is entitled to more?

I asked for cheese fries and they gave me this at KFC – oh well, might as well try it right – it came with a combo that we bought for the family. The wife wanted to try the ribs and so I bought some chicken to eat with this. The sour cream and the meat and tomato is really not my thing, couldn’t stomach it. Next time, I know to be sure to check before leaving KFC.

The Coffee Coach Express aka train station is open for business again. We used to love going there till one day .. we got bad ice cream, YES ! bad soft serve ice cream at that, from that day on, the spouse didn’t want to eat there anymore. But everyone deserve a second chance and since summer is round the corner, I might just be able to convince her to try the train snacks again.

Right by the waterfront, where everything is happening during the summer and since the town is expecting the Mega-Yacht to come in, it is actually a goldmine if they know how to manage this snack place. They have lobsters, calamari, fish and chips, fries and many other snack stuff and all sorts of colorful drinks.

Unfortunately, they are a lot pricier than most places for a snack shack, and only during days where they have events on the waterfront, they get some business, even then I feel they can do a lot better. The Coffee Coach is now owned by Rudders, they used to be own by someone else outta town who had another restaurant but I guess he didn’t want the hassle no more? Hard to do business in this town because it is so hard to get good workers.

I love cheese but not so much into cream cheese. Unfortunately, for me the wife loves anything healthy, so sometimes she indulges in cream cheese but of course it had to be light cream cheese with a toasted sesame seed bagel from Tim Hortons. She pretty much tasted all kinds of bagel from all over the world and she finds Tim Hortons bagel one of the best when it is eaten hot. But nothing beats having a smoked salmon with cream cheese anything bagel toasted. So if you are headed this way – Atlantic Canada or anywheres in Canada, Tim’s bagel is cheap and good.

I’m a real sandwich eater, I can eat sandwiches for all my meals but the wife likes varieties of fillings for her sandwiches and these home made chicken salad that you can get from Sobeys is one of the best thing. Not too, too expensive and pretty good. We keep them in our fridge for emergencies, alas the daughter won’t eat it.

Seafood salad goes good with toast too, not as expensive as the chicken salad but like i said, the wife like different kind of varieties. But I think she loves her smoked salmon best and although compared to where she is from, it is way cheaper her, she won’t buy them too often.

Once you’ve eaten Arby’s roast beef, you know you are not going anywhere else for fast food. Bad fast food ? I don’t think, you should see how much beef they give you inside your bun, it’s crazy. Almost like beef don’t cost any money here. Super thin slices of roast beef and just order them without the dressing else you will have them dripping all over your shirt. I made this mistake once and I order them plain now and put whatever I want later. Try their curly fries as well and they do have salad as well.

The wife said i had to go to the hottest hot dog stand when i am in L.A. – I asked her which one because I have been to so many and she mentioned pink. So dutifully like any good husband i went to take some pictures and eat some. It was definitely packed as you can see, open till late and full of greasy ingredients but the people here just loves it.

Yes, love the varieties as you can see up here and definitely must have the onion rings and the pink pop. You can find pictures of hollywood stars pasted all over the walls of this hot dog shack.
