Being A Good Mom

0

Easier said than done – but like all parents – we want to do our best and not let anything bad happen to our babies.  But what if your baby is a bit older and wiser and decided that they want to learn to play guitar but they are so young – I hear you grumbling – what do they know right?  Same thoughts too on my part – but if you don’t let them do what they are interested in most at the moment – then you are depriving them of learning a new instruments and/or developing  what true talent they may have or do not have.   Being a good mom doesn’t mean you have to get everything for them because they want it – but if you can find a cheap way for them to learn it online – why not?  So if anyone tells me that their kids want to take up guitar lessons – I strongly suggest this online site for guitar lessons – real cheap too!

Vintage Fashion Or Vintage Thinking

I came across this book earlier this year – and didn’t think much about it – till I met an old friend from my childhood days.  And when I saw this book again – I was reminded about him and his thinking and those of his dad.  Song and his father – even his mother are from the 50s and stuck in the 50s I think.  They believed that their wives or a woman’s place is in the kitchen or home.   But that doesn’t mean that their wives or woman can be sloppy in their dressing for they own a small business – and supposedly doing quite well.

In this gorgeous style guide from the 50s, American fashion designer Anne Fogarty reveals the secrets of ‘wife-dressing’ – the art of looking chic on all occasions, be it at a cocktail party, on the tennis pitch or in the boudoir. Illustrated with Fogarty’s stylish drawings and 50s fashion photography from John French, this handbag-sized guide contains all the advice and inspiration you need to make you the happiest and hippest couple in town.

I met Song after 25 years and although his wife look skinny – and he has 3 kids – the wife is dressed well – still in the 70s I think but definitely respectable looking.  Song seems to be doing well – his kids are teenagers – and I’m happy for him.  But he still is the gentleman that I’ve known when I was a teenager – but I’m sure he must now look at me – and think – hey !  i looked and dress better than his wife and more well -traveled than he.

Life is sure funny isn’t it !  I don’t think I would have been happy if I did end up with Song – he and his family are just so old-fashioned.  I doubt his wife ever traveled on her own nor his children.

Long Service Award

0

The spouse had been working for the same company for about 20 years now and this year he is in charge of ordering the long service award for his subordinates.  They have the 5 years award, the 10 years, the 15 years and then the 25 years.  I suggested  personalized coin instead of the usual acrylic award – that way the employees can just carry it with him – if he wants to show them to his families and friends – instead of leaving them at home  or in the office – where no one can see it and admire it.

I would prefer the personalized coin myself – because it would be a great talking piece for company’s function or going for a company’s convention or anything business related.   And if you are working for a established company like the spouse’s – the price per coin is definitely worth looking into – since you will be ordering more than just 100.  It is a good idea – I hope he brings it up to his boss – and if his boss was as smart as I – I’m sure he would go for the personalized coins too.

Defining My Downtime

Shopping is not how I define my downtime – nor is doing exercises – hahah!  I’m unfortunately, the “different” kind – whereby downtime is not spent with the spouse nor the children.  My downtime is for me alone and I’m quite selfish about it.   I think I’ve learned the art of my alone time – meaning really alone – going to a spa – and not even talking to the masseuse  – I like to go into my own world during my alone time.  And if I want to go for a drink – it has to be with my best girlfriends and not with my spouse.  Yes, defining my downtime is just exactly that and everyone needs their downtime every now and then if not more.

Precious Find

I never thought I would see coffee art in Nova Scotia but I was wrong – this cafe in Dartmouth sure was surprising and lived up to its name for being the best cafe in Halifax.  I read about the cafe in the Coast and had meant to visit many a times.  I was finally up in the city and went to try out their coffee – although not as good as the ones I had in Paris – it was still excellent.  The next time I’m trying the chocolate croissant with it.   Two If By Sea is going to be one of my favorite place to be when I am in Halifax.

Essentials

I love my car, in fact I pride myself for choosing the right car for myself – and keeping it well maintained unlike the spouse.  I cleaned it often – I dust it and I make sure that it’s vacuumed inside at least once a month.  If I feel like it – I would bring it for a shine too.  While other woman put frilly stuff in their cars I looked for the more essentials that is of quality for the car interior and exterior.  You will never find me with a pink hello kitty in my car – sorry – NO SIR!   I had my auto floor liners changed because of the weather we have here in Canada – winter boots and the snow can do nasty things to the car – so a good floor liners were a must.   I didn’t mind spending more money than I would on other things – because my car is my way of getting around – and I’m not a sloppy person – so I do take care of my car – and never wait for the spouse to help me out.  While some women cannot even gas up their own cars – I’m great with my garage guys and even when there is nothing wrong with my car – I bring them donuts and coffee every now and then – so I know that the floor liners were a good buy.

A Journey

Life is about a journey and the kind of decisions you’ve made throughout your life.  As I looked into my past – there are things that I wished I didn’t do – and there are things I wished I could do it all over again.  The choices that we make – are ours – no one forced us to make those choices and if the choice was wrong – we learned from it – and move on and hopefully, the next time round make better decisions.  When we hear and read that as one grows older – one becomes wiser – from our experiences – our failure, our disappointments, our successes and even though we may not realized it then – it is all about making the right choices.

Life isn’t hard at all – so when people tell me that life is hard – it’s not true.  What is a hard life?  I was brought up from a broken home – my dad was never there for me, and my mom she thinks that life was hard for her – but it wasn’t because she can choose to re-marry, not have so many kids – or move away from the man who did nothing for her but made used of her – her entire life and hurt her.  Life isn’t hard – and I can tell you that – because I’ve made bad choices too – not because life was hard – but because I had no directions – I lack the confidence when I was younger – but as I grew older – I knew what I had to do.  I chose to stay away from bad things and bad people, I chose my relationships with the people I want to have a relationship with.

Life is a journey – make yours a worthwhile one – and I hope that I can teach my children just that.

The Girl Who Eats Everything

For someone who is as adventurous as I am – and who claimed that she would try everything once – I cannot bring myself to eat Rappie pie .  Rappie pie is said to be the most significant Nova Scotian food – but yet – I can’t get over the mushiness of it – and the feel of it.   It’s made out of potatoes and some meat – chicken or ham perhaps – but it’s the gooeyness of the pie – that makes me not want to try it.  I’ve been in Canada for a long time – and people cannot believed that I won’t try Rappie pie.  Crazy much?

Birthday & Present

We were invited to our niece’s birthday – and it’s not just any birthday – it was a themed party birthday – where all the little friends dressed up in their favorite fairy tale fashion.  We knew that the little girl was going to get all sorts of toys for her birthday so we decided to get her something useful instead – something she can use for a long, long time  – a step stool !! yes – not just an ordinary step stool but a colorful one that she can use for storage or a chair when she is tired.   She said she loved it so very much – when she opened her presents on the weekend.   We got her a swan lake step stool that was painted in pink and green – a lot of pink – and she loved it so much – we are very proud of her – because she knew it was a step stool immediately and told her parents that they no longer had to help her to wash her hands – because she can use the step stool to help her turn on and off the taps.  – Too cute or what!
