The bulk barn had been opened like almost a year now and when it first started, like everything else everyone was raving about it. But it’s not as cheap as they want us to think. A trip to bulk barn for the 3 of us can come up to easily $20 and the wife and the kid don’t eat a lot of munchies at that. Can you imagine, the families that comes with junk food kiddos ? daylight robbery the wife said.

We picked a little of everything, so that we can get to try everything that looks interesting in the store. But the wife said not to get the turkish delight, it is nothing like the ones, you get from a Greece nor a greek restaurant. Quite the disapointment especially there is a no tasting policy.

It’s spaghetties but getties is stucked because the kid calls it that. One never knew how versatile the spaghetties can get until you get a chinese wife craving for noodles. Lately, we haven’t had any luck getting her some udon to fry some noodles for herself and the kid. So she did what she knows best, IMPROVISED and used getties and some bee hoon instead. Bee hoon is rice vermecilli if you didn’t already know that. So for those like my wife, who needs noodles but can’t find them, try using ghettis. The tip that may save your marriage.

I’m a real sandwich eater, I can eat sandwiches for all my meals but the wife likes varieties of fillings for her sandwiches and these home made chicken salad that you can get from Sobeys is one of the best thing. Not too, too expensive and pretty good. We keep them in our fridge for emergencies, alas the daughter won’t eat it.

Seafood salad goes good with toast too, not as expensive as the chicken salad but like i said, the wife like different kind of varieties. But I think she loves her smoked salmon best and although compared to where she is from, it is way cheaper her, she won’t buy them too often.

We used to travel a lot for work and the wife misses her hotel breakfast, so once in a while, I’ll make this anything goes omelet for her. Just a change of taste and different food for her and soemtimes, we have this for a late nite supper. Unlike what she was used to in Asia, she can get food in the middle of the night from the hawker center just a few minutes walk away. If given a choice, I think she would have prefer to have dim sum instead or some chilli crab.
Omelets are easy to make and you can put anything you like into it and flip it after it is cooked and you are all done. We used a good wok, so no oil is need and it doesn’t stick onto the wok too. I recommend Tfal because Meyers doesn’t seems to last too long. Our investment in a good Tfal was the best decision we made getting a wok.

Don’t think it is healthy but it was cheap and at 50% off – can’t refuse an offer like these here.

We cooked some curry in the middle of the night in hope that we didn’t have to get up too early the next day too cook before rushing the kid off to school and us to work. It was late and I didn’t realised that the chicken was bad till i cooked it and it smelled really funny. A check with the wife and she said – no – the curry is bad – it smelled awful. I had to throw the whole pot out. Bad chicken makes bad curry. The next time, I better check the chicken first, the spices are precious to the wife because you can’t get them here, she had friends sent them to her from home.

The wife calls this the Nazi Deli because of its Nazi chef but that was a long time ago, the current chef is nice and the Nazi chef although cooked excellent food is gone. I was back for a business trip and thought I would drop in for some pastrami sandwich while the wife had onion soup and reuben sandwich with sauerkraut.
The Steeples deli is actually quite a nice cozy place but come lunch time, you probably don’t want to go there, it is too cramp. Located at Tanglin Shopping Center, just off Orchard Road, it’s on the 4th floor and opens daily even on Sundays. I guess we will always visit the Steeples deli whenever we are back in Singapore because my wife have been patronising this place since her college days.

I wasn’t kidding when I told you all that I liked junk food. Krispy Kreme in Japan is a must when we had a stopover there. I bought a bunch to share with the co-workers in India and they were thrilled. Eating it fresh brings out the ultimate taste of these donuts but it still tasted pretty good after a few hours. Located in Shinjiku, Tokyo – we never miss this store.

Once you’ve eaten Arby’s roast beef, you know you are not going anywhere else for fast food. Bad fast food ? I don’t think, you should see how much beef they give you inside your bun, it’s crazy. Almost like beef don’t cost any money here. Super thin slices of roast beef and just order them without the dressing else you will have them dripping all over your shirt. I made this mistake once and I order them plain now and put whatever I want later. Try their curly fries as well and they do have salad as well.

We have a thing about ceasar salad and can’t find anything good after having some in Tijuana, where they make the ceasar salad right in front of you. It was great stuff and for years, we have been looking for something comparable and we chance upon a small eatery here off the coast where they served real anchovies in their ceasar salad, it was quite amusing but we were game to try anything new. I have to say we prefer the ones smashed into the garlic instead of whole anchovies though. I forsee a trip to Mexico soon.
